True to its name, the service has a solid no-logs policy, robust 256-bit encryption (OpenVPN and WireGuard protocols), and plenty of advanced features. Our methodology for choosing the best VPNs for a Romanian IP address

Our objective testing process allows us to confidently recommend VPNs that have all the features you need to get — and use — a Romanian IP address. Let’s take a closer look at what these tests involved.

Network suitability

We began in the obvious place: by checking that providers had servers in Romania. To make sure these providers were suitably versatile, we then scored them on the number of countries they supported overall. Finally, we tested them with a range of streaming platforms. This included testing them with the big-name services that are best at blocking VPNs: Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+.

These scores were weighted and combined to generate an overall score out of 10 for each provider.

NordVPN scored an impressive 9.8 out of 10 overall. It had servers in more countries than any of the other VPNs, and also worked with a greater range of geo-restricted streaming platforms. ExpressVPN was the next-best option, though it has servers in 15 fewer countries than NordVPN.

Speed

Slow connections can ruin your online experience, which is why we carried out multiple speed tests before recommending particular providers. Tests involved connecting to each provider’s Romanian servers and measuring the resulting download speed in the morning, at noon, and in the afternoon. We used the desktop version of the Ookla speed-testing app for measurements, and rate-limited our base connection speed to 250 Mbps (which is a little slower than the average user’s download speed in the US).

Using a free VPN to get a Romanian IP address

Free VPNs can be an attractive prospect, but they actually come with several major disadvantages that prevent us from recommending them. First of all, you’re unlikely to find a free VPN with servers in Romania, which means you won’t be able to use one to gain a Romanian IP address. In the event that you do find one, it’s likely to offer a disappointing service. Free services usually have limited networks yet more users than the majority of paid VPNs. This causes major network slowdown, which manifests as slow browsing speeds and videos that pause frequently to buffer if they load at all. Free VPNs are also usually the first to be blacklisted by copyright holders, so you probably won’t be able to use them to access your chosen site.

There are more concerning risks, too. Since these VPNs are ‘free’, the services find other ways to create profit.
