A Romanian IP address is a useful tool if you want to browse the internet safely from within Romania, or if you want to access Romanian content from abroad. By far, the easiest way to gain an IP address from Romania is by using a VPN.
Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) run your internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel, which not only protects your data and privacy but also allows you to spoof your location. By connecting to a server in another country, you can change your IP address and use services that are only normally available in that country. For example, by connecting to a VPN server in Romania, you can browse the internet as though you were actually in Romania — regardless of your real location.
In this article, we list the best VPNs with servers in Romania and explain how to use them to gain a Romanian IP address. We provide detailed reviews of each of the VPNs we recommend later on but in case you’re short on time, we’ll start with a brief summary.

How to get a Romanian IP address abroad
With the right VPN, getting a Romanian IP address is actually fairly straightforward. Just follow these simple steps, and you’ll be accessing your home content in no time.
Here’s how to get a Romania IP address with a VPN:
- Start by signing up for a suitable VPN service. We recommend NordVPN.
- Next, download the appropriate version of the app for your device and install it.
- Connect to any of your VPN’s Romanian servers; this will change your IP address.
- Try to access a geo-blocked Romanian site. It should load immediately, but if not, try clearing your cache and cookies before refreshing the page.
Remember: if you’re trying to watch a live event, it’s important to perform the steps above well in advance. Should anything not work as expected, this approach means you’ll have time to contact your VPN’s customer support team for help and might not have to miss any of your favorite shows.

How we selected the top VPNs for a Romanian IP
The sheer number of competing VPNs makes it harder than it should be to find the best ones for a specific task. To find the VPNs that are best for getting a Romanian IP address, we tested each VPN in the following key areas:
- Network suitability: We started by checking that VPNs had servers in Romania able to provide users with a Romanian IP address. We then scored them on the number of countries they supported overall, and their ability to access streaming services in Romania and around the world.
- Speed: There’s not much point getting a Romanian IP address if the resulting connection is too slow to use. We found the fastest VPNs for Romania by carrying out multiple speed tests over the course of a day.
- Security and privacy: Not all VPNs are able to keep your online activities hidden from your ISP or malicious third parties. We used 16 security and privacy criteria to weed out those without adequate protection.
- Ease of use: VPN software needn’t be difficult to use. We used ten different metrics to find providers with well-designed apps and strong customer support.
- Value for money: Getting good value requires more than just comparing subscription costs. Our eight test metrics also considered things like money-back guarantees and introductory offers.
This is just an overview. You can read more about how we test and rank the VPNs in the methodology section later in the article. For now, let’s take a closer look at the ones that impressed us.

PrivateVPN is a service based in Sweden that was originally backed by activists who support people’s rights to torrent. True to its name, the service has a solid no-logs policy, robust 256-bit encryption (OpenVPN and WireGuard protocols), and plenty of advanced features. This includes apps for all popular platforms that come with a kill switch, DNS leak protection, and obfuscation. Plus, a single subscription lets you connect up to 10 devices.

Tested speeds averaged 52.42 Mbps, which is comfortably fast enough for streaming in 4K — provided that you have a decent base connection speed (ours was 250 Mbps). PrivateVPN allows you to reduce the level of encryption used on your traffic, which will help improve download speeds if needed.
Servers are located in 63+ countries, and while it only has around 200 in total, they are bare-metal and completely controlled by the provider. They are excellent for streaming, and able to access around 20 different Netflix regions. The good news is that PrivateVPN also has servers in Bucharest, to let you get a Romanian IP address when you need one.

Perhaps the only real drawback is that this VPN’s live chat is only available between 18 and 22 hours per day. That said, you can drop them an email outside of these hours, and they will get back to you quickly. You can also test the service yourself using its 30-day money-back guarantee.
Buy this VPN if:
- You need a great-value service that prioritizes your privacy.
- You want to easily stream Romanian content from platforms like Netflix Romania and TVR.
- You value robust security features such as a stealth mode, obfuscation, and choice of robust encryption protocols.
- You want a service with a simple interface that’s easy for beginners to use.
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You need to access a wide variety of servers – only 200 severs globally.
- You need extremely high speeds for heavy-duty tasks or have a slow base connection speed.
SUPER RELIABLE:PrivateVPN is a secure and private service. It’s great for streaming and torrenting, and very easy to use. Lots of advanced features, including a kill switch and obfuscation. No logs. 30-day money-back guarantee.

Our methodology for choosing the best VPNs for a Romanian IP address
Our objective testing process allows us to confidently recommend VPNs that have all the features you need to get — and use — a Romanian IP address. Let’s take a closer look at what these tests involved.
Network suitability
We began in the obvious place: by checking that providers had servers in Romania. To make sure these providers were suitably versatile, we then scored them on the number of countries they supported overall. Finally, we tested them with a range of streaming platforms. This included testing them with the big-name services that are best at blocking VPNs: Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+.
These scores were weighted and combined to generate an overall score out of 10 for each provider.
NordVPN scored an impressive 9.8 out of 10 overall. It had servers in more countries than any of the other VPNs, and also worked with a greater range of geo-restricted streaming platforms. ExpressVPN was the next-best option, though it has servers in 15 fewer countries than NordVPN.
Speed
Slow connections can ruin your online experience, which is why we carried out multiple speed tests before recommending particular providers. Tests involved connecting to each provider’s Romanian servers and measuring the resulting download speed in the morning, at noon, and in the afternoon. We used the desktop version of the Ookla speed-testing app for measurements, and rate-limited our base connection speed to 250 Mbps (which is a little slower than the average user’s download speed in the US).
We averaged each provider’s results, then converted to a score out of 10 relative to the others. This allows a direct comparison between providers.
NordVPN was the fastest provider overall, though Surfshark was only marginally slower. Both providers are excellent choices for anyone planning on streaming, gaming, or video calling while using a Romanian IP address.
Security and privacy
We tested each VPN app for IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks to ensure that it provided adequate security while using a Romanian IP address. As you can see from the table below, we also checked the VPN protocols and only recommended those services that had robust AES encryption.

Each of the above metrics was assigned a score based on its relative importance. We then combined these scores to generate overall scores for each provider.
NordVPN and Surfshark each scored 9.5 and offer similarly robust protection. Both providers use RAM-only servers and strong encryption as standard. Furthermore, they’ve undertaken multiple third-party audits to back up their no-logging claims. PIA also scored highly, though its obfuscation isn’t as effective as its higher-scoring counterparts.
Ease of use
Regardless of your prior VPN experience, well-designed apps are always appreciated. A reliable customer service department is also extremely useful when you have technical questions. You can see how providers compare in both of these areas in the table below.

NordVPN and PIA were the easiest to use providers overall. Their customer support teams are responsive and knowledgeable, while their apps make it easy for new users to get a Romanian IP address. IPVanish and ExpressVPN are solid alternatives.

Again, each metric was given a score. These were combined to create an overall score out of 10 for each provider.
Surfshark, with a score of 9.7, was the best-value provider overall. IPVanish’s score of 9.6 out of 10 was also impressive. Both VPNs allow unlimited simultaneous device connections and have low-cost two-year subscriptions available. NordVPN also has heavily discounted introductory offers, though its connection limit maxes out at 10 devices.
Using a free VPN to get a Romanian IP address
Free VPNs can be an attractive prospect, but they actually come with several major disadvantages that prevent us from recommending them. First of all, you’re unlikely to find a free VPN with servers in Romania, which means you won’t be able to use one to gain a Romanian IP address. In the event that you do find one, it’s likely to offer a disappointing service. Free services usually have limited networks yet more users than the majority of paid VPNs. This causes major network slowdown, which manifests as slow browsing speeds and videos that pause frequently to buffer if they load at all. Free VPNs are also usually the first to be blacklisted by copyright holders, so you probably won’t be able to use them to access your chosen site.
There are more concerning risks, too. Since these VPNs are ‘free’, the services find other ways to create profit. Often, they’ll sell ad space or offer increased speeds for a monthly fee, but the problem is that some go even further. By storing tracking cookies on your device, these companies can gather data about how you use the internet. This can then be sold to advertisers later, most commonly without your knowledge.
It can be difficult to even find a safe, free VPN. In the past, we’ve seen a major provider sell idle user bandwidth to help run a botnet. Unfortunately, when well-known VPNs resort to shady business tactics, it seems smaller services are more inclined to act the same way; a recent analysis of over 280 free VPN apps showed that almost 40% contained malware, while 18% used no encryption, and over 80% were vulnerable to IPv6 leaks.
To keep yourself and your personal information safe, we recommend using a reputable VPN with a history of standing up for its users’ privacy instead of a free service.
How to check if your IP address has changed to Romania
There are a few different ways to tell if your VPN has successfully changed your IP address or not. The easiest method is to use one of the many tools specifically created for this purpose.
Just follow the steps below to make sure you’re actually browsing with a Romanian IP address:
- Open up our IP address checker
- You’ll see your real IP address. Make a note of this so we can compare it later
- Next, log into your VPN app and choose a server in Romania
- Wait a moment for the VPN to connect
- Go back to the IP address-checking tool and refresh the page
- It should now display a completely different IP address and say that you’re in Romania.
- If not, try clearing your cookies, switching to a different Romanian server, or changing your connection protocol.
- If none of these solutions help, get in touch with your VPN’s support team for more assistance
Getting a Romanian IP address: FAQs
Are VPNs legal in Romania?
VPNs are legal in Romania and most of the world. There are a handful of countries that place restrictions on which providers you can use, but the vast majority of locations have no issue with you keeping your online activities private. After all, millions of people rely on VPNs to work remotely, bank safely, and keep their identities hidden.
Disclaimer: Although we’ve spent hours researching this topic, we are not legal experts. As such, nothing we’ve said above should be taken as legal advice. We encourage you to consult local laws or perhaps even seek a professional’s opinion before attempting to use a VPN while traveling abroad.
Can I watch Romanian TV abroad with a VPN?
Most geo-blocked services examine the user’s IP address to see if they’re in a specific country or not. Connecting to a VPN server automatically gives you a new, country-specific IP address, meaning that a Romanian server allows you to browse the internet and stream content from platforms like ProTV, TVR, and Digi24 as though you were actually there.
You’ll find that some platforms have more advanced geo-blocking measures than others. They might use your phone’s GPS or browser’s location data to double-check. You might also be required to provide a local address, phone number, or payment method when you sign up. If you normally live in Romania, you may still be able to sign up from abroad, but otherwise, these services will be very difficult if not impossible to register for.
Can I get in trouble for streaming Romanian TV from abroad?
It might surprise you to learn that most countries don’t actually have laws that are explicitly against accessing region-locked content with a VPN. In fact, in all of our years of research, we’ve never heard of a single person being prosecuted for this anywhere in the world.
Now, using a VPN to watch content that’s normally inaccessible where you are is almost always against a streaming platform’s terms of service. All the same, even if it detects you’re connected to a VPN (which is far from guaranteed), you’ll usually just be made to turn it off before you can stream anything.
What else can I use a Romanian IP address for?
One common use is for accessing online banking services abroad. Automated anti-fraud alerts are becoming more common. Usually, these are triggered when a system detects that you’ve logged in (or attempted to) from a different country. While designed with good intentions, these measures also mean that when traveling, you could find yourself unable to access your account until you verify your identity. You can greatly reduce the likelihood of this happening by connecting to a VPN server in your home country first.
Public wifi networks are convenient but rarely as secure as they should be. There’s no way of knowing who’s monitoring your activities, and public networks are prime spots for hackers to lie in wait. Further, certain websites might be inaccessible via certain networks. VPNs not only allow you to prevent monitoring, but they also let you browse the internet freely, even in countries with strict online censorship.
