Amazon Prime Video has a huge library of shows and movies, however many of these are restricted by the country or region you live in. A VPN is a popular means of bypassing these geographical restrictions and opening up the wider Amazon Prime international library. Using a VPN allows you to watch shows from other country catalogs or connect to your home version of Amazon Prime when traveling abroad. Using the right VPN with Amazon Prime Video allows you to stream many more movies and shows not available in your region.
Unfortunately, Amazon Prime is very effective at blocking VPNs with very few providers consistently beating the VPN ban. We’ll show those that still work in our round-up of the best VPNs for Amazon Prime Video.
We’ll also walk you through exactly how to use a VPN to watch Amazon Prime Video and reveal VPNs that don’t work.
If you don’t want to read the full article, here’s a summary of our recommended VPNs.
These are the best VPNs for watching Amazon Prime Video:
- NordVPN: Our top pick for Amazon Prime. Reliably unblocks Prime Video and similar platforms. Super-fast connections make it ideal for streaming.
- Surfshark: Best budget provider for Amazon Prime Video. Speedy and security-conscious, with no connection or bandwidth limits. Keeps no logs at all.
- ExpressVPN: Veteran VPN provider that works great with Amazon Prime Video and similar services. Offers a great range of security and privacy options.

How to unblock Amazon Prime Video with a VPN
Once you’ve selected and signed up for one of the VPNs above, follow these instructions to unblock the Prime Video catalog.
Here’s how to unblock Amazon Prime Video from abroad:
- Download and install the VPN app for your device. We recommend NordVPN.
- Run the app and select a VPN server in the US. Note that not all servers will work, so if they aren’t labeled, you might need to consult your provider’s website or customer service to ask which one to connect to.
- Hit the Connect button on your VPN.
- Once the connection has been established, open the Amazon Prime video you want to watch. It should now be unblocked!
Note that Amazon is a bit confusing in how Prime users access videos. You can find TV shows and movies from the main Amazon website and watch from there, or access them from primevideo.com. We had better luck going through Amazon, but if your VPN doesn’t work for one, just try the other.

Streaming Amazon Prime Video US from abroad
Every Amazon Prime account comes with a subscription to Amazon Prime Video. The popularity of the United States’ most popular e-commerce company translates to a huge number of viewers on its premium video streaming service.
Unfortunately, a lot of the most popular content in the Prime Video catalog is only available in the US. If you’re spending time outside of the country, you’ll need to trick Amazon into thinking you’re on US soil to unblock it, or else get error 4601:
That’s where a VPN, or virtual private network, comes in. A VPN encrypts all your internet traffic and routes it through a middleman server in a location of your choosing. In this case, the location would be somewhere in the United States so you can watch Amazon Prime Video from abroad. VPNs will allow you to watch Amazon Prime and Instant Video from outside the US on a Windows PC, Mac OSX, iPhone, iPad, Android, and Linux. Plus all the VPNs we recommend offer unlimited bandwidth so there is no limit on how much you can stream Amazon Prime content.
In the past, Amazon looked the other way when it came to VPN users. Most VPNs with servers in the US would allow users to bypass the geographic restriction. That’s no longer the case, and Amazon’s firewall has gotten much stricter as of our 2018 testing, and attempting to stream through a blacklisted VPN results in proxy error 1042:
Still, a handful of VPNs are able to bypass Amazon’s VPN ban. We check these VPNs regularly as Amazon continues to block new VPNs. With that in mind, we’ve curated a list of the best VPNs for Amazon Prime Video from outside the US based on a vigorous testing methodology which you can find in the how we test VPNs section.

VPNs that don’t unblock Prime Video
Amazon Prime detects and blocks many VPNs. The following VPN providers do not unblock Amazon Prime Video from outside of the United States, according to our tests or by their own admission:
- Private Internet Access (PIA)
- Turbo VPN
- Avast VPN
- Opera VPN
We subject VPNs to a variety of tests as part of our product research. In order to figure out the best VPN for streaming Amazon Prime, we needed to decide on criteria by which to judge them. Anyone streaming needs a reliable and fast VPN connection with US servers and great usability features. Based on that, we’re going to use the following criteria to evaluate each VPN:
- Beat the Amazon Prime VPN block: of course, the number one feature we look for in an Amazon Prime VPN is the ability to access videos on the streaming service while abroad.
- Fast connection speeds: when streaming Amazon Prime it’s important to have good speeds to avoid annoying buffering. Plus your VPN should always offer consistent and reliable speeds so you can enjoy a smooth streaming experience.
- DNS leak protection: it’s important to make sure that any VPN service you use can offer anonymity and protection online.
- Plenty of VPN servers in the US: Amazon Prime offers the largest library to users in the US so for Americans traveling abroad US servers are key to accessing their content from back home.
- Multiplatform apps available: Many Amazon users watch content on their Kindle Fire tablets and Amazon Fire Stick or Fire TV so all the VPNs on our list work on a wide range of devices.
- Prioritizes the privacy of users: any VPN service needs to offer privacy-first policies to protect the online activities of their users.

Amazon Instant Video vs Amazon Prime Video
It’s worth noting that Amazon Prime Video is not the same as Amazon Instant Video. Amazon Prime Video is an unlimited streaming service that comes as part of an Amazon Prime subscription. Amazon Instant Video is a pay-per-view service where users can buy or rent TV shows and movies. You don’t need an Amazon Prime account to buy or rent on Instant Video, although having a Prime subscription might score you an extra discount.
A VPN connection is not necessary for Amazon Instant Video purchases, though prices may vary between countries.
How to set up a VPN with Amazon Fire TV stick
Update: All of the VPNs we recommend now make apps specifically for Amazon Fire TV. You can find them by searching from the home screen on your Firestick or Fire Cube.
Amazon Fire TVs and 2nd-generation-or-newer Fire TV Sticks do support VPN apps, but you’ll have to sideload them since none are available in the default Amazon app store. This process isn’t difficult but isn’t as easy as just installing an app from Google Play. Check out our article on how to install a VPN on an Amazon Fire TV stick.
The first-generation Amazon Fire TV stick doesn’t have built-in support for VPNs and there is no VPN software you can install on it unless you root it. If you want to watch Amazon Prime Video content from outside the US on a Fire TV stick, you’ll need to set up your VPN on a router.
You can use your laptop to set up a virtual router, which makes your laptop into a wifi hotspot similar to smartphone tethering. Then turn on the VPN on your laptop and connect the Fire TV to that. We have instructions on how to do this for both Windows and MacOS.
Alternatively, you can set up a VPN directly on your home wifi router. Doing so will connect all the devices connected to your wifi network to the VPN. This process varies depending on the router firmware.

You can find instructions on how to set up a Fire TV with a VPN here. This tutorial is for Netflix, but the same rules apply to Amazon Prime Video. This approach also works if you want to learn how to watch Amazon Prime video content on any other Android-powered device like Roku, Chromecast, or a smart TV.
Amazon Prime VPN FAQs
Can Amazon Prime Video detect my VPN?
If Amazon detects that you're using a VPN to stream Prime Video, you'll receive an error message about proxies (see above) and won't be able to watch. If your VPN isn't detected, then you should be able to stream without issue and the error message won't appear.
We've tested all of our recommended VPNs to ensure they aren't detected by Amazon.
Is it legal to stream Amazon Prime Video from abroad?
That being said, there's no precedent of Amazon penalizing users who choose to use VPNs, other than simply blocking Prime content.
Do these VPNs work with Amazon Prime Video in other countries like the UK, Canada, and Australia?
We only test VPNs with the US version of Prime Video. They might well work with other countries' versions of Prime Video, but you'll need to test it out yourself to verify. Luckily, all of the VPNs we recommend come with money-back guarantees so there's no risk if the one you choose doesn't work. We have a separate tutorial on how to change country in Amazon Prime.
What countries is Amazon Prime Video available in?
Depending on your country, Prime Video might be a standalone streaming service, or it might come bundled with the Prime shopping membership program.
Prime is available in Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, the UK and the US.
Prime Video is available in pretty much every other country as a standalone service. The price and selection of TV shows, movies, and Prime Music varies by country.
The US version of Prime has the largest catalog of streaming content.
Do any free VPNs work with Amazon Prime Video?
None of the free VPNs we tested worked with Amazon Prime Video. Paid VPN services invest considerable sums into evading VPN blocks with only a small selection consistently beating Amazon's VPN ban.
What is the minimum internet speed required for Amazon Prime Video to run HD content?
You need at least 5 Mbps of available bandwidth to stream HD quality video on Amazon Prime Video without buffering.
Here’s a breakdown of video qualities and their required internet speeds:
- 900 Kbps for low quality (bare minimum)
- 3 Mbps for standard definition (480p)
- 4 Mbps for high definition (720p)
- 5 Mbps for full high definition (1080p)
- 15 Mbps for 4K HDR ultra high definition (2160p)
Will using a VPN affect the streaming quality of Amazon Prime Video?
All VPNs slow down your internet connection to some degree due to the extra time it takes to route streams through the VPN server and to decrypt the data as it arrives on your device. That being said, most users won’t notice a difference and there won’t be a change in video quality.
All of the VPNs we recommend meet the speed requirements for HD 1080p streaming, and most can even handle 4K streaming without buffering. Your performance may vary due to a number of factors, but if you notice quality has diminished, try connecting to a different VPN server.

Can you change the streaming quality on Amazon Prime?
It depends on what device you’re using. You can adjust video quality on Amazon Prime if you’re watching on a desktop web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc), the mobile app for iOS or Android, or an Amazon Fire TV Stick. The settings option lets you choose between Good, Better, or Best.
If you’re streaming Amazon Prime Video on a smart TV or a non-Amazon set-top streaming device, then the video quality option might not be available to you.
How do I stop my ISP from throttling Amazon Prime Video?
If you believe your internet service provider is specifically throttling Amazon Prime Video, then a VPN can help. A VPN’s encryption hides the contents of your internet connection, and routing data through the VPN server means your ISP has no idea that you’re accessing Prime Video at all. By using a VPN, your ISP can’t discriminate against a particular type or source of data.
However, a VPN only helps if your ISP is discriminately throttling a specific type of traffic or traffic to a specific destination. If you’ve reached your monthly data cap and all traffic is being throttled, then a VPN won’t help much.
Does Amazon Echo work with a VPN?
No, Amazon Echo does not support any VPN apps, and it has no built-in support for manual configuration. If you want to connect your Echo to a VPN, you’ll have to set up the VPN on a wi-fi router, then connect the Echo to it. Read more on how to set up a VPN on a router here.
How many subscribers does Amazon Prime Video have in 2021?
Amazon Prime, which includes Amazon’s premium shopping membership and the Prime Video streaming service, surpassed 200 million subscribers in 2021. Note that not all of those subscribers necessarily stream---a 2018 report shows about a quarter of Prime subscribers use the streaming service. The pandemic contributed significantly to the service’s growth over the past year.
Amazon doesn’t reveal exact Prime Video user numbers for either the US or its international streaming service.
Is Amazon Prime Video membership valid worldwide?
Yes, Prime Video is available worldwide in more than 200 countries. It is not available in China, Iran, North Korea, or Syria.
Note that Prime’s catalog of shows is not consistent across all countries. You might not be able to watch the same shows in another country as you do at home. Some countries are restricted to Amazon Originals with no third-party content. Use a VPN to access another country’s library of shows and movies.
Can I unblock Amazon Prime on mobile?
Yes, you can use a VPN to unblock Amazon Prime on a smartphone or tablet. All of the VPNs we recommend make apps for Android and iOS, among others.
However, not every VPN that works on the desktop website is guaranteed to work on the Prime Video mobile app.
We do not always test VPNs against Amazon’s mobile app, so we encourage you to sign up for one that works on desktop and take advantage of the 30-day money-back guarantee if it doesn’t work on iPhone or Android.
Will Amazon block my account for using a VPN?
Using a VPN to access your Amazon account while on vacation is not likely to get your account blocked. That said, using a VPN is technically in breach of the term of service, so you use a VPN at your own risk.
People all over the world use VPNs to access their home Prime account while traveling. They do this to place orders while on vacation that will be waiting for them when they get back home. Or to access their home country’s Prime Video catalog.
Generally speaking, you should not encounter any issues using a VPN to access your Amazon account, particularly if you use a secure VPN for Amazon from this guide. Despite this, we recommend that you check Amazon’s terms so that you are fully aware of any potential risks.
Does ExpressVPN work with Amazon Prime?
ExpressVPN will work with Amazon Prime most of the time but like many other VPN services it will be blocked from time to time. If ExpressVPN is blocked we suggest contacting ExpressVPN's support for an update on the latest status or trying another VPN service listed in this article.
