How to change Netflix region

Quick Summary
In Short

  • Many titles on Netflix are only available in certain countries and are blocked to most users.
  • You can use a VPN to watch content from other countries, but Netflix detects and blocks many popular VPNs.
  • We tested and compared 78+ VPNs to find which ones reliably allow users to change their Netflix region.
  • NordVPN is our #1 recommendation for switching Netflix region. It is simple and reliable to use and offers super-fast connections, which are ideal for streaming.

Netflix is geo-blocked, with different content libraries for every country in the world. However, there’s a quick and easy way to change your Netflix region: just use a Virtual Private Network (VPN). These services route your internet traffic through a server in another country, masking your real IP address and allowing you to spoof your location. This tricks Netflix into thinking you’re somewhere else entirely.

Unfortunately, Netflix is very good at spotting signs of VPN usage and has blocked most VPN providers entirely. Even if you manage to find one that still works, it’ll likely only be able to access a few different content libraries. We personally tested the top VPNs to see which are best for accessing Netflix, without compromising on speed, security, or price. Let’s begin with a brief overview of the best VPNs for changing your Netflix region:

Here’s our summary of the best VPNs to change location on Netflix:

  1. NordVPN: The most reliable VPN for switching Netflix countries. Excels at beating regional restrictions. Very high speeds, strong security, and a risk-free 30-day money-back guarantee. TIP In our testing we found that the cheapest NordVPN plan (Standard) works perfectly for changing Netflix region.
  2. Surfshark: The best budget VPN for changing Netflix regions. Strong on security, with steady speeds and unlimited connections. Very versatile, with no connection limit, and 24/7 customer support over live chat.
  3. Total VPN: Quick and great for Netflix UK, US, and more. Has plenty of advanced security features. Doesn’t compromise on privacy or speed.
  4. ProtonVPN: A secure VPN with 256-bit encryption, a no-logs policy, and a choice of protocols. Works reliably with Netflix. Extremely customizable.
  5. ExpressVPN: No-logs VPN with high speeds, exceptional streaming ability, and powerful privacy features. Works well with Netflix and a host of other streaming services.
  6. IPVanish: A no-logs provider capable of accessing multiple Netflix libraries from abroad. Robust security tools and no connection limit. Provides 24/7 support via live chat, email, and phone (on the Advanced plan).
  7. CyberGhost: Task-specific servers make finding accessing any Netflix region simple. A very easy to use service with low prices and strong security.
  8. PureVPN: Great for streaming Netflix thanks to fast speeds and reliable unblocking ability. Budget-friendly with plenty of security features.
  9. PrivateVPN: Works well with Netflix and beats the geographical restrictions of other streaming services. Strong on privacy and great customer service.

How to change Netflix region with a VPN: Step-by-step

Follow this step-by-step guide to change your Netflix region with a VPN:

  1. Sign into your Netflix account or sign up for one.
  2. Download and install a VPN that works for changing Netflix regionsAfter vigorous testing, we found NordVPN to be the most reliable VPN for accessing other Netflix regions.
  3. Connect to a VPN server in the country you want to change to. For example, for Netflix US, you will need a VPN with servers in the United States.
  4. Go to the Netflix website, and you should see the country site for the location of your selected server.
  5. Select a movie or TV show from that country’s Netflix library and enjoy!
  6. If you encounter any issues, you should try clearing your cookies and cache or connecting to a different server. If problems persist, you will need to reach out to customer support for technical help.

This method will allow you to watch Netflix anywhere abroad and is popular with people who travel frequently. For example, Americans visiting the UK will be able to securely stream American Netflix, and British travelers in the US can watch Netflix UK.

Criteria for the best VPNs for changing Netflix location

With so many VPNs on the market, it can be difficult to tell which is right for the task at hand. We created our list of the best VPNs for watching different Netflix regions based on hands-on testing and in-depth evaluations of the leading providers. Here’s a taster of the areas we looked at:

  • Speed: To determine the speeds users can expect while streaming Netflix, we conducted speed tests while connected to VPN servers in nine countries: Canada, France, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Singapore, South Africa, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
  • Streaming ability: We tested which Netflix regions we could access while connected to VPN servers in the different countries listed above. VPNs that provided the best international access received the highest score. As most people use more than one streaming service, we also scored providers on their ability to access the likes of Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, and more.
  • Ease of use: In our opinion, the best VPNs are those that don’t require babying. That’s why we keep an eye out for quality of life features like task-specific servers, 24/7 live chat, and a total lack of connection limits. All in all, we consider more than a dozen relevant criteria.
  • Security & privacy: We used 16 different metrics to evaluate each provider’s ability to keep users safe online. These include logging policies, encryption levels, security keys, and more.
  • Value for money: Our team carefully evaluated each VPN’s value by looking into their lowest price, permitted number of simultaneous connections, streaming ability, sale frequency, and more. To be eligible for a place in this list, providers must offer a money-back guarantee.

You can find a full exploration of our testing methodology later in the article, where we’ll also discuss the test results in further detail.

NordVPN is our number-one choice VPN for accessing and changing Netflix regions. It’s well known for its ability to access virtually any streaming platform and in our testing, we were able to stream a variety of libraries including Netflix UK, Canada, the Netherlands, France, Spain, the UK, Australia, Brazil, Italy, India, and Germany. Users can watch on up to 10 devices at the same time and speak directly with support staff using NordVPN’s 24/7 live chat service.

This provider has a network of 8,000+ RAM-only servers spread across 120+ countries. You can change location at any time from the home screen or the map on NordVPN’s map screen. There are also a wide range of specialty servers designed for tasks like torrenting, accessing the dark web, or bypassing country-wide censorship.

NordVPN server locations.
Users can choose a server using the interactive map.

In addition to its regular servers, NordVPN also has a range of specialty servers available. These include Double VPN, which routes traffic through an additional VPN server; Obfuscated servers that disguise traffic so that it can evade blocks in countries like China; and Onion Over VPN servers that provide one-click access to the Tor network.

As part of our testing, we wanted to know what sort of speeds users could expect while streaming various Netflix regions. To this end, we carried out speed tests while connected to NordVPN servers in nine different countries. We used a home broadband connection (with an average download speed of 53.05 Mbps) to mimic the average user’s experience of using the service.

Netflix requires a download speed of at least 15 Mbps to stream in ultra High Definition (UHD). As you can see from the above, NordVPN is at least twice as fast as this in all locations — even with our relatively slow base connection. In six of the countries tested, it was three times faster than the speed needed for streaming in the highest resolution possible. All in all, a great result.

This VPN goes above and beyond where privacy is concerned. To begin with, it uses unbreakable 256-bit AES encryption backed up by DNS, IPv6, and WebRTC leak protection, and an audited no-logs policy. NordVPN also offers a wide range of advanced features like app-based split tunneling, a customizable kill switch, and automatic ad and tracker-blocking. If you’re in a country with strict digital censorship, you can even use its NordWhisper protocol to stream Netflix as normal.

NordVPN has several subscription plans available, the cheapest of which is the two-year basic option. All subscriptions allow users to connect up to 10 devices simultaneously and come with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Router configuration is possible if you want to use VPN-incompatible devices to stream different Netflix regions.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want access to the widest range of Netflix libraries (US, Canada, NL, India, and more)
  • You stream on a slower internet connection and want consistently high speeds
  • You’re traveling in regions that aggressively block VPNs (e.g., China)
  • You value advanced privacy tools like Meshnet or Onion over VPN
  • You want robust protection from IP/DNS/WebRTC leaks while streaming Netflix

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You just want a basic VPN without too many advanced features

BEST FOR NETFLIX:NordVPN is our first choice since it’s versatile and works with so many different Netflix libraries from abroad. Strong online privacy and security credentials. Try it risk-free thanks to its 30-day money-back guarantee.

Surfshark is the best budget VPN for Netflix. It operates roughly 4,500 servers in 100+ countries and can reliably access a whole host of geo-blocked platforms. Regarding Netflix specifically, we were able to stream content from the British, Japanese, Dutch, Indian, and French catalogs. The provider also works with numerous other streaming services, including Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Fandango, and Disney Plus. Better still, the apps are easy to use, there are no connection limits, and live chat-based support is available 24/7.

Furthermore, Surfshark comes with a standalone smart DNS service. Setting this up allows you to watch US Netflix on VPN-incompatible that allow you to modify DNS settings. Note that the smart DNS proxy is less secure than the normal VPN, which uses strong encryption and automatic kill switch protection to prevent data leaks.

Surfshark's Smart DNS.
Smart DNS can be used to spoof your games console’s virtual location.

To find out what sort of speeds the average user might expect while connected to a Surfshark server, we carried out speed tests in nine different countries. We used a home broadband connection with an average download speed of 53.05 Mbps.

Surfshark was comfortably fast enough for streaming 4K Netflix content in all the regions tested. It was particularly quick in the UK, France, and India, with speeds that were only a few Mbps slower than our base connection speed.

It’s time to talk about security. Surfshark has all of the privacy features you’d expect including 256-bit AES encryption, a kill switch, and protection against DNS and IPv6 leaks. There’s also a built-in ad and tracker-blocker and stealth mode as well as the option to swap your IP address periodically without changing your location. Surfshark follows a no-logs policy and has been audited several times.

WebRTC leak test.
Surfshark passed the WebRTC leak test.

Some of the provider’s more interesting features include an alternative ID generator. This creates a whole new persona — complete with name, address, and date of birth — in a few clicks. The tool is useful if you want to keep your personal details private when setting up online accounts. Addresses are currently available in the US, Denmark, Australia, Germany, Portugal, and Brazil.

Surfshark's Alternative ID tool.
It’s very easy to create a new persona for use online.

Surfshark is one of the few VPNs that has static IP addresses available. These are IP addresses that don’t change when a user disconnects from, and reconnects to, the server. They’re currently available in six countries.

Surfshark apps all have a full GUI and are available for Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android, and Linux. Alternatively, you could follow manual setup instructions to get this VPN running on your router.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want an affordable VPN that works with multiple Netflix regions
  • You plan to share your Netflix VPN thanks to unlimited device connections
  • You want a budget-friendly VPN that also provides Smart DNS
  • You’d like static IP addresses for consistent access to specific Netflix regions

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You require app-based split tunneling

BEST BUDGET PICK:Surfshark is a great low-cost option for watching Netflix abroad. Comes with strong security, speedy connections, and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Speed-wise, the provider averaged 44.1 Mbps across the nine test countries. As might be expected given our UK location, it was the fastest in the UK, US, and France. We had no problem streaming Netflix in 4K while connected to the UK and US servers.

This provider takes all of the stress out of staying safe online. Users are kept anonymous thanks to Total VPN’s unbreakable encryption, kill switch, and protection against DNS and IPv6 leaks. Its more advanced features include a custom protocl named Hydra that can bypass some forms of VPN-blocking, and a split tunneling option that lets you decide which sites are allowed to pass through unencrypted. Total VPN follows a no-logging policy and can’t reveal what you get up to online under any circumstances.

IPVanish has significantly improved its streaming abilities over the years. Platforms that troubled it before, such as Netflix, no longer pose any issues. In fact, we’ve had great results accessing multiple popular catalogs, including Netflix UK, US, Brazil, Japan and France. The provider also works well with a whole host of other big-name streaming platforms, such as Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, Max, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, and Paramount Plus.

Streaming Netflix with IPVanish
Streaming Netflix while connected to an IPVanish server in Brazil.

Of course, there’s not much point in being able to access streaming services if your connection is too slow to watch anything. To find out how fast IPVanish was, we tested the speeds of nine of its servers. We wanted to simulate an average user’s experience, so we used a home broadband connection (which had a relatively modest average download speed of 53.05 Mbps).

IPVanish was particularly fast in France and the US. It was slowest in Hong Kong and Japan, though still fast enough to meet the speed requirements for streaming Netflix in UHD.

Getting connected is easy, thanks to the server map on the app’s dashboard. Simply choose one of this VPN’s 3,200 servers and you’ll be connected in a matter of seconds. You’ll then be able to keep an eye on various important pieces of information like your current IP address, total bandwidth used, and which protocol you’re using.

The IPVanish dashboard.
The IPVanish dashboard has plenty of connection information available.

IPVanish also has a list of servers in the location tab, here you can see how many are available in each location — which is something most VPNs are reluctant to share. Users can choose between individual servers using the drop-down menu. The listed ping time and load makes it easy to find the fastest.

The IPVanish server list.
IPVanish shows the number of servers in each location.

There are several supported protocols including WireGuard, IKEv2, and OpenVPN, all of which are industry-approved. IPVanish also boasts 256-bit AES encryption, a kill switch, automatic DNS and IPv6 leak protection, and the ability to scramble your OpenVPN traffic, hiding the fact that you’re using a VPN at all. Newer additions to IPVanish’s security toolkit include multi-hop servers, a tool that checks whether links are safe to open, and automatic ad and tracker-blocking. Crucially, this service refuses to keep any logs.

Network Security options.
IPVanish has a range of Network Security options available.

IPVanish has apps for iOS, Android, Windows, Linux, Mac OS, and Amazon Fire TV. It also provides manual configuration instructions for several types of home router. This allows you to stream different Netflix regions using devices that don’t natively support VPN software, such as smart TVs and games consoles.

Subscriptions are competitively priced, with a two-year plan costing the equivalent of $2.19 a month. IPVanish sweetens the deal further by allowing unlimited simultaneous device connections and throwing in free access to a SOCKS5 proxy. There’s also an Advanced plan that bundles the VPN with cloud storage and a remotely accessible secure browser for a little more each month.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want to pick specific Netflix servers and see server load and ping times
  • You’d like a VPN that grants access to Netflix libraries in multiple countries
  • You want budget-friendly subscriptions without committing to long deals

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You want to pay for your VPN subscription anonymously using cryptocurrency
  • You prefer a VPN with extremely high streaming speeds in all regions

QUICK AND CAPABLE:IPVanish makes it as easy as possible to stream your favorite Netflix shows while traveling. Offers unlimited device connections, fast speeds, a strong security toolkit, and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

CyberGhost is a Romania-based VPN with a truly expansive network. There are currently servers in 100+ countries, with many of these specifically designed for streaming. As a matter of fact, this VPN can access over a dozen Netflix libraries including some its rivals can’t, like Netflix Sweden, Singapore, and Turkey. Up to seven devices can be protected at the same time and there’s 24/7 assistance over live chat, though hopefully you’ll never have to take advantage of this.

CyberGhost's streaming-optimized servers.
CyberGhost has servers optimized for numerous streaming platforms in a variety of regions.

The provider simplifies the streaming process in other ways, too. Its Smart Rules feature includes the option to link streaming apps to particular CyberGhost servers so that when the app is launched, it automatically connects to the relevant server. If there’s a particular Netflix region you favor, setting it up with the relevant server can make your life that bit easier.

Other Smart Rules options include setting up automatic public wi-fi protection and choosing an app to launch — such as a preferred browser — when CyberGhost first connects.

CyberGhost’s Smart Rules can automate some processes.

o find out how fast CyberGhost connections were, we tested its download speeds while connected to servers in nine different countries. We used a home broadband connection with a so-so speed of 53.05 Mbps to replicate the experience of an average user.

Speeds were great in Canada and France, where the results were just a few Mbps shy of our base connection speed. The provider performed less well in Hong Kong and South Africa, but was still above the minimum threshold for streaming Netflix in UHD.

So far, this all sounds great. But how does CyberGhost perform on privacy? Well, it uses 256-bit AES encryption which is currently considered uncrackable. This is backed up by DNS, WebRTC, and IPv6 leak protection, a kill switch, and a strict no-logs policy (which has been professionally audited). It blocks ads and trackers automatically, supports industry-approved protocols like WireGuard, and can even send your data via a random port, which can help bypass some forms of VPN-detection. Overall, we were very impressed by CyberGhost’s security offering.

CyberGhost subscriptions are at the cheaper end of the market, with a two-year plan costing a little over $2 a month. There are apps for iOS, Android, Windows, MacOS, and Linux, as well as manual setup guides for most types of router.

  • You’re new to VPNs and want beginner-friendly apps for Netflix

  • You want a generous 45-day money-back guarantee

Don’t buy this VPN if:

When tested, it performed flawlessly to access a wide selection of international streaming services, including Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, Max, BBC iPlayer, and — most importantly — Netflix.

Streaming Netflix with PureVPN

Now, this service actually does have streaming-optimized servers though they’re hidden in the Shortcuts menu. At the time of writing, PureVPN has servers designed to access Netflix USA, Australia, Japan, Canada, Germany, France, the UK, Italy, and India. If there’s a Netflix catalog that isn’t listed and you can find a server that works, you can set up your own shortcut easily enough.

PureVPN Shortcuts.

The apps are very newcomer-friendly and easy to use. They all make use of unbreakable encryption, a kill switch, and protection against DNS and IPv6 leaks. PureVPN doesn’t keep any logs of your activities and was actually the first VPN to be independently-audited. Obfuscation is always on, which is unusual but highly welcome. Not only does this help with accessing stubborn streaming platforms like Netflix, but it enables users to bypass VPN blocks in countries such as China. It’s even possible to let certain apps pass through the VPN unencrypted if you’d like.

Users can choose a connection protocol or let PureVPN make the decision for them.

To find out what speeds the average user could expect while streaming Netflix, we tested the provider using a home broadband connection with a modest average download speed of 53.05 Mbps.

PureVPN performed well in eight of the nine countries tested. Its slowest result was in Hong Kong, where it was still fast enough for streaming in UHD.

The provider is a good choice if you’re looking for a cheap long-term subscription. Apps are available for MacOS, Linux, iOS, Windows, and Android. There are router setup guides in the support section of PureVPN’s website.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want dedicated streaming servers labeled by Netflix region

PrivateVPN runs a small network of servers, but it covers 63+ countries and has the potential access to a wide range of geo-restricted streaming content. During testing, we were able to access the US, UK, Japan, Spain, Brazil, France, and Italy catalogs without issue.

Streaming Netflix with PrivateVPN

In addition to Netflix, the provider works with BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and various other popular streaming sites. Note that we occasionally needed to enable the Stealth VPN option in order to bypass streaming providers’ blocks, but this is easy enough to do.

PrivateVPN's Stealth VPN.
Stealth VPN can be turned on with a simple toggle switch. Just make sure you’re using the Advanced view or the option won’t show up.

To get an idea of the kind of performance you can expect, our team tested PrivateVPN’s speeds while connected to servers in multiple different countries. Here’s how well this VPN held up:

Speeds were consistently at least 30 Mbps, which is twice the recommended download speed for watching Netflix in UHD. The provider was the fastest in Canada and France, and slowest in Hong Kong and South Africa.

PrivateVPN allows a little more connection customization than most providers. For example, users can switch between 128-bit and 256-bit high-level encryption depending on their speed vs security requirements. The former is still considered extremely secure. IPv6 and DNS leak protection is enabled by default, though you can turn it off if you really want to. We tested this feature and confirmed that the provider was free from IPv4 and WebRTC leaks.

WebRTC leak test.
PrivateVPN passed the WebRTC leak test.

PrivateVPN was originally created to aid safe and secure torrenting. It’s still a good option for torrenting as it’s fast and allows port forwarding (most VPNs don’t). It has a solid privacy policy and doesn’t keep any records of subscribers’ source addresses or those of the servers they connect to. Apps are easy to use, with users able to choose between a Simple view of the dashboard and an Advanced view. If all you want to do is change the Netflix region with PrivateVPN, the Simple view provides all you need.

PrivateVPN's simplified dashboard.
The Simple view of the PrivateVPN dashboard.

PrivateVPN allows up to 10 simultaneous device connections, which is higher than the industry average. Manual configuration is possible on compatible routers, including Synology and Asus RT models. There are also apps for Windows, MacOS, Android, and iOS devices.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want the option to bypass streaming blocks using Stealth VPN
  • You’re looking for a low-cost VPN with a high degree of versatility
  • You value being able to switch between lighter and stronger encryption

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You’re looking for a VPN with a large server network
  • You want the fastest speeds for UHD Netflix streaming

FAST SPEEDS:PrivateVPN works with US Netflix and many other country versions. Allows up to 10 devices on the same account. Small network of servers but fast and capable connections. 30-day money-back guarantee.

How to access US Netflix

Using a VPN to access US Netflix on vacation is easy no matter where you go in the world. The only caveat is that you must pick a VPN that works, and in 2025 there are very few left that can access Netflix reliably.

In this guide, we have done the hard work by recommending the world’s best VPNs for streaming Netflix abroad. We have included a short setup guide below to make things even easier.

Here’s how to access US Netflix while traveling abroad:

  1. Pick a VPN that works for changing Netflix regions. We recommend NordVPN because it represents superb value, outstanding security, and fantastic speeds for streaming US Netflix and many other services.
  2. Subscribe to the VPN. Thanks to our automated coupon, you can use our link to get the VPN at the best possible cost.
  3. Download the VPN software. Our recommendations include apps for all platforms that are easy to install and use on any device.
  4. Install the VPN and log in using your credentials.
  5. Log into Netflix. It’s important to do this before you connect to the VPN since Netflix sometimes shows a false “incorrect login credentials” error if you connect before logging in.
  6. Pick a VPN server in the US and click to connect. As soon as the VPN connection is established, your real location is concealed, and you appear to have a valid IP address in the US.
  7. Watch US Netflix from anywhere via your app or the website to watch US-only shows and movies!

How to change Netflix region on various devices

How to change Netflix region on an iPhone

To access different Netflix libraries on your phone, you’ll need to use a VPN to spoof your location. Don’t worry, it’s not as complex as it sounds.

Here’s how to change your Netflix region on iPhone:

  1. Subscribe to a reputable VPN provider with an easy-to-use mobile app. We recommend NordVPN.
  2. On your iPhone, go to the App Store and download and install your VPN app.
  3. Log into the app using your VPN provider credentials.
  4. Connect to a server location that corresponds to the Netflix library you want to watch. For example, use a UK server to access Netflix UK.
  5. Now open your Netflix app, and you should have access to the library you want.

Note that even if a VPN works with the country you want, you might find that not all servers in that location will work. If you run into issues, switch servers or contact your VPN’s customer support team for help with troubleshooting.

How to change Netflix region on an Android phone

Accessing a different country’s Netflix library on your Android phone is possible if you use a VPN, which is quite simple to set up.

Here’s how to change Netflix region on an Android phone:

  1. Sign up with your chosen VPN provider (choose one with a good Android app like NordVPN).
  2. On your Android phone, go to the Google Play Store and download the app for your VPN.
  3. Once installed, log into the app with your new VPN credentials.
  4. Select a server in the correct location for the Netflix library you want to watch. For example, to access Netflix UK, connect to a UK server.
  5. Now, launch your Netflix app, and you should be able to watch content from your desired library.

Although many VPNs work with Netflix, not all work with every library, and even for the libraries they do work with, not every server will work. Netflix regularly adds new blocks, and VPN providers introduce workarounds in a cat-and-mouse game. As such, you may need to contact your VPN’s customer support team for assistance, as they can provide specific instructions.

How to change Netflix region on PS5

PS5 does not support native VPN apps, but there are still a couple of ways you can change Netflix region on your PS5. One is to use a VPN router, which will provide VPN coverage for every device that’s connected to that router. Another method involves connecting your gaming console to a VPN-connected computer via an ethernet cable, but this is fairly cumbersome.

If you’re looking for the simplest way to change Netflix region on your PS5, ExpressVPN’s MediaStreamer may be your best bet. This comes free with every ExpressVPN subscription, which is worth considering when choosing the most suitable VPN for your needs.

There are two main issues with using MediaStreamer. First off, it’s a Smart DNS service, not a VPN. As such, it won’t encrypt your data or help keep you safe — it’s strictly for streaming. On that note, MediaStreamer only works with US streaming services, whereas a VPN can unblock apps from a far wider range of countries.

If you wish to try MediaStreamer, here are the steps:

  1. Sign up for an ExpressVPN account and submit payment.
  2. Sign in to the ExpressVPN website and go to the ExpressVPN DNS settings page.
  3. Go to IP address registration, select Register my IP address, and toggle Automatically register my IP address to the on position.
  4. Head to the ExpressVPN setup page and locate your MediaStreamer DNS server IP address.
  5. On your PS5, go to Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection.
  6. Under How do you want to connect to the network?, choose Use Wi-Fi or Use a LAN cable. If prompted to use your existing wifi settings, select Yes.
  7. Under How do you want to set up the Internet connection?, choose Custom.
  8. Select your wifi connection and enter your password.
  9. Choose the following settings: IP Address SettingsAutomatic; DHCP Host NameDo Not Specify; DNS SettingsManual. Then select Primary DNS.
  10. Enter your MediaStreamer DNS server IP address (found in step 4) and click Done, then Next.
  11. Finally, select the following settings: MTU SettingsAutomatic; Proxy ServerDo Not Use; Internet settings updatedTest Internet Connection.

Note you will have to restart your PS5 for these changes to take effect.

How to change Netflix region on Xbox

There aren’t any native VPN apps for Xbox but don’t worry, there are a few ways to change your Xbox’s Netflix region. We’ll run you through each of these below:

Method one: Smart DNS

The quickest option is to use a smart DNS service, since this just requires you to change your console’s DNS settings. However, this usually only grants you access to the US library, and not all VPNs include this feature.

Method two: Share a VPN connection

You can actually share a VPN connection from another device, so if you already use a VPN on your main PC, changing Netflix region is pretty simple. We’ve written guides on how to create a virtual router on Windows and MacOS in case you’re interested. When you’re ready, just select a server in the appropriate country on your PC’s VPN app, and your Xbox’s location should change too.

Method three: Router VPN

It’s also possible to install a VPN directly on your router. This will redirect traffic from any device that connects to the network, and you’re free to choose from a much wider range of locations. The downside is that this is a fairly involved process, and you’ll likely need to spend a few hours getting set up.

How to change Netflix region on Roku

Roku is another system that does not support native VPN apps, but if you’re willing to make some effort, you can change the Netflix region on Roku.

Here’s how to change Netflix country on Roku:

  1. Set up a VPN router and connect your Roku to it.
  2. Create a VPN-protected Wi-Fi hotspot on your laptop computer and connect your Roku to it.
  3. Screencast to the Roku using a VPN-protected Android smartphone or tablet.

We go into more detail about these options in our Best VPNs for Roku post.

How to change Netflix region on a smart TV

To change your Netflix region on a smart TV, you’ll need to install a VPN app. This may be an app for Android TV or Amazon Fire TV (Fire TV Stick). You can search for these apps via the Google Play Store and via the Amazon Fire TV main menu. Simply:

  1. Download and install the VPN app,
  2. Connect to a server in the Netflix region you’d like to access
  3. Launch the Netflix app (and sign in if necessary).
  4. You should now see the content from the new library.

Note that an alternative method is to install a VPN on your router (manual configuration is required).

Why doesn’t Netflix have subtitles in my language?

Netflix’s subtitle system is fairly complex. When you start playing content, Netflix looks at where you are in the world (or where your IP address points to, if you’re using a VPN) and suggests between five and seven popular subtitle languages based on your location.

If you regularly can’t find your preferred language, we’d suggest manually enabling it in Netflix’s language settings menu. This will ensure it will always appear, so long as the content has actually been subtitled in that language.

Unfortunately, if you’re hoping to download content instead of stream it, things are a little different. In these scenarios, Netflix only provides subtitles in the the two most popular languages. As such, it may not be possible to always watch your favorite shows in your preferred language.

Using a free VPN to change Netflix location

Free VPN providers are easy to find and can be very tempting. But we’d have to advise you to steer clear for several reasons. Providing full access to Netflix requires a lot of effort on the part of a provider, and free services aren’t profitable enough to justify the use of these resources on an ongoing basis. A free VPN might let you explore another country’s Netflix catalog, but when it comes time to watch, you’ll almost certainly encounter the Netflix proxy error.

What’s more, these services typically provide users with a limited selection of servers, which means you’re less likely to be able to access the Netflix library you’re looking for. Even if you do get access, you’ll probably be frustrated with slow connection speeds and even having to wait in a queue for some servers. To make matters worse, free VPNs almost always have low monthly bandwidth caps, so you likely won’t be able to stream as much as you’d like.

Practicality isn’t the only issue with free services. We’ve put a heavy emphasis on privacy and security above because it’s important for users to know what’s happening with their data. The providers of free VPN services need to make money somehow and often do so through questionable methods. Some interrupt your experience with annoying ads, log your activity to sell data to third parties, or even carry malware.

Netflix country versions available

Netflix started slowly and solely operated in the US for its first decade. It finally expanded internationally with Canadian Netflix in 2010, and then there was no stopping it. After a massive 2016 expansion, Netflix is now available in most countries except China, Crimea, Syria, Russia, and North Korea. When it comes to China, not wanting to miss out on this massive market, Netflix has pushed for licensing deals instead of having an actual presence in the country.

Although Netflix is available in most countries, the catalog of shows and movies varies greatly depending on your region. Aside from having different titles available, some regions have a very small selection. This is due to the different licensing agreements in each region.

Changing Netflix region FAQs

Is it illegal to change my Netflix region with a VPN?

Using a VPN with Netflix is not illegal in most countries. However, doing so goes against the company’s terms of use. After all, due to licensing restrictions, Netflix has to at least be seen to put measures in place to prevent global distribution of its entire library through the use of VPNs. That said, we are not aware of any documented cases in which someone was penalized for accessing content through a VPN.

While this article isn’t intended to be legal advice, the worst thing likely to happen is you’ll be shown a very limited content library (restricted to Netflix-owned shows) or receive a proxy error.

The only other reason you might be likely to get in trouble is if VPNs are illegal in your country, but this is only the case in a few regions.

Can I change my region on Netflix without a VPN?

There are a couple of alternative ways to access other Netflix libraries without using a VPN. However, none of these methods encrypt your traffic. In fact, some may actually weaken your privacy by allowing whoever owns the hardware to see everything you get up to online. That said, here are your options:

  • Smart DNS service: These send your data through DNS servers, allowing you to stream Netflix on devices without full VPN support, such as games consoles. You can’t choose a location, though, and are usually limited to the US library.
  • Proxy servers: Essentially a standalone VPN server minus the encryption. Popular servers are frequently blocked by major streaming platforms but you may be able to find one that works.

Don’t be tempted to try using Tor or remote desktop software: Netflix addressed these workarounds a long time ago, and they no longer work at all. The best, most reliable way to switch Netflix regions is still to use a VPN. Remember: you can swap catalog on any internet-connected device (even older smart TVs) by installing the VPN on your router.

Which Netflix library has the most content?

Netflix constantly adds and removes titles from its library as new licensing agreements are made and old ones expire. As you can imagine, this makes it pretty tricky to keep track of which regional catalogs are the biggest.

Luckily, our researchers have done just that. At the time of writing, Iceland has the largest library, with 9,765 titles (3,321 TV shows and 6,444 movies). This is closely followed by Slovenia (8,883 titles) and Latvia (8,799 titles).

At the other end of the spectrum, we have the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where subscribers get access to just 4,883 titles (3,363 of which are movies). That’s almost a thousand titles less than the second-smallest library (Ukraine, with 5,569 titles).

The US Netflix library falls in the middle with 7,101 titles, while the Canadian Netflix library has 7,169 titles.

Can you use Netflix in two different countries at the same time?

Yes, you can. If you have a standard subscription, you can watch on two devices at the same time and it doesn’t matter where you log in from. If you have a premium plan, you can watch on up to four devices at a time.

Technically, according to Netflix’s terms of use, you must live with any person you’re sharing an account with. But if, for example, one household member goes abroad on vacation, they should still be able to access the account and watch as normal. They will just be served content from the Netflix library of the region they’re visiting (unless they spoof their location with a VPN).

Do I need a US payment method for US Netflix?

One of the many ways Netflix restricts its content is by requiring payment in the local currency. You won’t be able to pay for a US Netflix subscription in pounds or euros, for instance. However, there is a way around this since Netflix allows you to pay in gift cards.

Now, these gift cards are also currency-specific, so you’ll need one that’s loaded with US dollars. You can purchase digital vouchers from a variety of online retailers (or buy one in-store, if you’re traveling in the US), then simply enter the code on the Netflix website.

It’s worth mentioning that Netflix accounts themselves aren’t region-locked. In other words, even if you successfully create a US Netflix account, you’ll still only be able to watch titles that are available in your current location. The only difference is the monthly subscription price and the currency you pay in.

How do I fix the Netflix proxy error?

If you’re experiencing the frustrating Netflix proxy error, there are a few things to try to get up and running again:

  1. Disable VPN or Proxy Server: If you are using a VPN or proxy server, try disabling it and see if that resolves the issue. Streaming providers easily detect VPNs with lackluster encryption, so if the error vanishes when disabling your VPN, you may need to try a different provider.
  2. Clear browser data and cache: Clearing your browser data and cache can help resolve many issues with streaming services such as Netflix. You can do this by going to your browser’s History or Clear Browsing Data section and deleting all data and cache.
  3. Restart your device: A simple restart can often help resolve connection issues when streaming content. Turn off your device and wait 30 seconds before turning it back on again.
  4. Try another browser: If the issue persists, try using a different web browser, such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, to see if that resolves the error.
  5. Contact Netflix support: If none of these steps work, contact Netflix’s customer service for more assistance. They can provide further advice on how to fix the proxy error.

How do I fix Netflix error code M7111-1331-5067?

If you’re seeing the error code M7111-1331-5067 on Netflix, it typically points to a problem with your internet connection or with your browser’s settings.

To resolve the issue, start by checking your internet connection. If you’re connected but still receiving the error code, try changing your DNS settings to public DNS servers (like 8.8.8.8 for Google). You can also try using a VPN service to bypass any potential restrictions from your ISP.

Next, check that you don’t have any browser extensions or plugins interfering with Netflix. Try watching in incognito or private browsing mode, or clearing your cookies and cache. If none of those steps work, contact Netflix customer support.
