- Hulu blocks users from outside the US, so you can’t stream your favorite shows from other countries without a VPN.
- You can unblock Hulu by picking an American VPN server (making it appear as though you’re located in the US. However, Hulu blocks most VPNs outright.
- We tested and compared 78+ VPNs to find which ones reliably unblock Hulu and offer a reliable streaming experience.
- NordVPN is our top VPN for Hulu. With hundreds of US servers, you can easily watch Hulu from anywhere.
Are you looking for the best VPN for Hulu? Maybe you want to stream Hulu and keep up with top series like The Bear and Only Murders In The Building while traveling abroad? Or maybe you’re struggling to access the site on a work or school network where streaming platforms are restricted. Look no further; the VPNs we list here can help you access Hulu anywhere.
Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) encrypt all of your internet traffic, routing it through a server in a location of your choosing. This not only allows you to regain access to geo-blocked platforms like Hulu abroad but also greatly increases your digital privacy since your VPN’s encryption stops your ISP, the government, and public wifi hotspot owners from seeing what you get up to online.
Unfortunately, like Netflix, Hulu takes steps to prevent people from connecting via VPN, and not all providers are capable of bypassing these measures. But, thanks to our years of experience and extensive testing, we have compiled a list of the top VPNs that work seamlessly and consistently with Hulu, ensuring you can enjoy the best Hulu content from anywhere in the world.
In this extensive guide to the best VPNs for Hulu, we cover each provider in detail. However, if you can’t wait, we’ll start with a summary of our research.

How we selected the best Hulu VPNs
Don’t be fooled into thinking that Hulu looks the other way on proxy users just because it’s not as popular as Netflix. In fact, Hulu’s VPN ban is even more advanced than Netflix’s firewall. All of its content is strictly limited to residents of the US and Japan, and if you try to access video on Hulu from outside those two countries, the site will prevent you from watching.
Trying to watch Hulu with a normal VPN results in this proxy error message:
“Based on your IP address, we noticed you are trying to access Hulu through an anonymous proxy tool. Hulu is not currently available outside the US. If you’re in the US, you’ll need to disable your anonymizer to access videos on Hulu.”
For this reason, we have found that not just any VPN service will do, as most cannot bypass Hulu’s strict firewall rules. Finding providers that can consistently access Hulu was our first challenge, but we also expect the VPNs we recommend to be able to do much more than that. In order to make our list of the top VPNs for Hulu, we evaluated more than 70 leading providers based on the following five areas:
- Speed: Streaming requires a stable, high-speed connection. Our team tested each VPN’s US servers using a 45 Mbps connection, measuring their speeds at three times of day to check their top speeds and reliability.
- Security and privacy: A VPN that cna’t keep you safe isn’t worth bothering with. Our top picks must include unbreakable encryption, a kill switch, leak protection, and a no-logs policy, though we score them based on 16 criteria.
- Streaming ability: First off, we have to make sure each VPN works with Hulu. Then, we check the number of US server locations and overall network size before testing VPNs against some of the most popular streaming platforms.
- Ease of use: We’re big fans of any service that goes out of its way to remain accessible to novices. Anything that streamlines your experience, such as 24/7 support over live chat, preconfigured security features, or a total lack of connection limits is something that will earn points in this category.
- Value for money: Finally, we make sure that our top VPNs are actually worth what they charge. Our experts also look for student discounts, money-back guarantees, and any deals that could lower your monthly price.
We go into more detail on our testing methodology and show you the results of our tests, later in this article. But first, let’s take a closer look at the providers that impressed us.

NordVPN is our top VPN for Hulu. This service has more than 2,900 servers in the United States alone (making it perfect for bypassing blackouts on regional games), and 8,000 in total across 120+ countries. As well as helping you watch Hulu from anywhere in the world, this service works with platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube TV, giving you plenty of options for what to watch. It allows up to 10 connections at the same time and offers around the clock support over live chat.
To make sure NordVPN is actually fast enough for watching Hulu, we tested its US servers in the morning, noon, and evening. We used a typical 45 Mbps broadband connection to give you an idea of how the VPN is likely to perform under normal home settings. If you want to learn about NordVPN’s top speeds, you can check out our full NordVPN speed tests (carried out using a dedicated test server in Ohio) in our detailed NordVPN review linked below.
Our US-specific tests revealed only minimal speed reduction, with an average download speed of 41.03 Mbps compared to our base speed of 45.43 Mbps without a VPN. Overall, these results are hugely impressive. The minimal impact on our baseline speed means that NordVPN is perfect for watching Hulu – as well as for torrenting, gaming, and making private video calls.
NordVPN is packed with features that make it an ideal choice for streaming Hulu and gaining watertight online privacy. The apps come with a kill switch to cut your internet if the VPN drops out, a choice of protocols, robust encryption, and multi-hop connections. You also get access to Tor over VPN servers, which means you can access the Dark Web without your ISP finding out.
The split tunneling option lets you decide which apps should route through the VPN and which can use your regular internet connection. For example, you can stream Hulu through the VPN while simultaneously accessing local services via your standard connection.
To enhance security further, NordVPN includes an auto-connect feature that automatically activates the VPN when you join a public wifi network. This prevents you from accidentally exposing your data over an unprotected network and helps to protect you against Evil Twin hotspots set up by hackers.
NordVPN lets you pick between OpenVPN and its proprietary NordLynx protocol, which is optimized for faster streaming. We recommend sticking to NordLynx when watching Hulu. If you need stronger privacy levels (to bypass censorship in countries like the UAE, Iran, or China), you may decide to use the new NordWhisper protocol or this VPN’s obfuscated servers.
NordVPN’s commitment to privacy and security is underpinned by its no logging policy, fully audited apps and servers, and diskless servers that run in RAM. For users seeking enhanced security, the Double VPN feature routes your traffic through two different servers, adding an extra layer of encryption and protection.
We thoroughly tested NordVPN’s US servers for IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks. These checks ascertained that NordVPN is completely reliable for privacy purposes. The VPN tunnel prevents local networks, ISPs, government agencies, websites, and hackers from tracking your activities.
NordVPN has its own apps for Linux, Windows, MacOS, Android, and iOS. This service can also be manually installed on a wide range of routers (check its website’s help section for configuration instructions). Pre-configured routers are available from FlashRouters.
Note: if you’re struggling to get Hulu working check out our dedicated article: NordVPN not working with Hulu? Try this.

Surfshark is the best budget VPN for watching Hulu abroad. it has a massive network, with around 4,500 servers spread across 100+ countries and two dozen US states. Not only that, this VPN works flawlessly with stubborn streaming services. In addition to Hulu, you’ll be able to stream Peacock, Disney+, Prime Video, Pluto TV, and much, much more. It’s also a fantastic VPN for bypassing MLB blackouts.Surfshark doesn’t have any connection or bandwidth limits and operates a 24/7 live chat service just in case you ever need help.
We tested Surfshark’s US servers by streaming content on Hulu and other American platforms. The results were impressive: we experienced no buffering or lag. This gives you a precise idea of how the VPN will perform under normal home settings.
The results in the table above reveal a top speed that is only a 2 Mbps reduction from our baseline speeds (without a VPN). This is a remarkable result, considering the relatively low cost of a subscription. Average download speeds of 40.25 Mbps mean that Surfshark is perfect for streaming Hulu. These speeds also make Surfshark a reliable choice for accessing US game servers, torrenting, and video conferencing in countries where VoIP services are blocked.
Surfshark takes user privacy extremely seriously. The VPN has been fully audited and maintains a rock-solid no-logs policy. The VPN runs on a self-owned network of diskless servers and offers a choice of secure protocols (OpenVPN and WireGuard) with robust AES or ChaCha20 encryption. There’s also unbreakable encryption, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, and a kill switch, not to mention the CleanWeb feature that blocks ads, trackers, and malware automatically.
There are plenty of advanced features built-in too. These include a tool that changes your IP address at regular intervals, an automatic connection option that’ll keep you safe on unsecured networks, and a NoBorders mode capable of beating strict digital censorship in countries like China, Egypt, or the UAE. Finally, you can allow specific apps or websites to pass through unencrypted thanks to Surfshark’s split tunneling functionality.
Surfshark even lets you access shared static IP addresses for no additional cost. This is useful if you need to maintain the same IP address each session (prevents services from flagging you for suspicious activity). If you want a dedicated static IP reserved for your use only, you can pay a little extra to get one ($3.75 per month). This feature is not specifically needed for streaming Hulu (but can be useful if you want an IP address that never changes and that nobody else uses).
Surfshark offers easy-to-use apps for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, and Amazon Fire TV, allowing you to get a US IP address on any device. The apps are intuitive and user-friendly, with the most important settings located in a single menu, making them easy to access. You can also follow manual setup instructions to install this VPN on most routers.
Note: if you’re struggling to get Hulu working check out our dedicated article: Surfshark not working with Hulu? Try this!

Total VPN operates more than 1,800 servers throughout 80+ countries including the United States. We’ve had great results using this VPN to access platforms like Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Netflix US from abroad, meaning you’ll never run out of things to watch. Users can connect up to five devices at the same time and communicate with support staff using the website’s ticket system in the unlikely event that anything doesn’t work as expected.
It’s not enough for a VPN to just work with Hulu; they also have to be quick enough to facilitate a good viewing experience. With this in mind, our experts performed three speed tests (one in the morning, at midday, and in the afternoon) on Total VPN’s US servers. Note that these tests were run on a 45.43 Mbps connection, so if your home broadband is faster, you’ll get better results than those shown below:
Total VPN managed to achieve average speeds of 39.14 Mbps. This made it the third-fastest provider we tested. Suffice it to say, this service is capable of handling anything you throw at it, from watching 4K video to torrenting to playing fast-paced online games. With a quick enough base connection, you could even do all of these things at once.
This provider has plenty of powerful security features designed to help you stream safely. First off, it boasts 256-bit AES encryption (which experts agree is currently uncrackable). This is backed up by DNS and IPv6 leak protection, a no-logging policy, and a kill switch that stops sending data the moment your connection drops unexpectedly. Total VPN also supports the Hydra protocol, which is designed to provide high speeds and avoid most VPN-detection systems (though it won’t help in high-censorship countries like China, unfortunately).
Total VPN offers its own apps for Windows, Android, macOS, and iOS. If you have issues with, read our troubleshooting guide for Total VPN not working with Hulu.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want a VPN that can reliably access most major streaming platforms
- You’re looking for a security-focused, no-logs service
- You’d prefer a VPN that’s suitable for novice users
- You want inexpensive long-term coverage
- You’d like a VPN that comes bundled with antivirus software
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You plan to protect lots of devices at the same time
WATCH HULU ANYWHERE:Total VPN has what it takes to bypass Hulu’s geographic restrictions and protect your privacy at the same time. This no-logs VPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on annual plans and 14 days on anything shorter.

ProtonVPN was created by the team behind Proton Mail, every journalists’ favorite privacy-conscious email client. That alone would be a strong selling point but when you consider that this VPN has 15,000 servers spread across 120 countries and can easily unblock every major streaming platform including Hulu, ProtonVPN becomes very hard to beat. There’s a 10 simultaneous connection limit, plus 24/7 customer support via live chat.
To evaluate ProtonVPN’s performance, we tested its US servers throughout the day using a standard home broadband connection. The results were impressive, with ProtonVPN achieving an average download speed of 39.08 Mbps on the paid plan.
This minimal drop from our baseline speed of 45.43 Mbps allowed for smooth HD streaming of Hulu without any buffering issues. These speeds make ProtonVPN a reliable choice for watching live TV, gaming on US servers, or handling other data-intensive tasks that require a US IP address.
ProtonVPN is exceptional when it comes to privacy, offering a strict no-logs policy, multi-hop connections, DNS leak protection, a kill switch, and a choice of protocols, including stealth options that help conceal your VPN usage from ISPs and government agencies. This VPN has been independently-audited on several occasions, proving that it doesn’t keep logs of your online activities.
There’s also an tool called NetShield that blocks ads and trackers automatically. ProtonVPN even has Tor over VPN servers, allowing you to browse the dark web anonymously. Port forwarding is available for torrenting at no extra cost, but ProtonVPN only opens one random port per session, so you’ll need to enter this port number into your torrent client each time. For the highest possible levels of data privacy, you can use its “Secure Core” servers, which are self-hosted in highly secure locations, such as underground bunkers. However, it’s important to note that Secure Core servers will slow you down, so they are not the best option for watching Hulu.
ProtonVPN offers apps for all major platforms, including Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Linux. The support section of its website also offers manual setup guides for most routers.
Buy this VPN if:
- You want fast, reliable US servers for streaming Hulu.
- You need advanced features like port forwarding, multi-hop, and Secure Core.
- You’re looking for a VPN that offers better value on its shorter plans
- You want access to a secure, privacy-focused service with a strong no-logs policy.
- You want a VPN service offered by a highly reputable provider
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You’re looking for the cheapest VPN possible long term.
- You prefer a simpler VPN with fewer advanced features.
ADVANCED USERS:ProtonVPN is a feature-rich VPN that is perfect for people with advanced privacy needs. It comes with port forwarding, making it great for seeding torrents. Servers are available in over 100+ countries, including plenty in the US, to watch Hulu on vacation or at work.

ExpressVPN is based in the British Virgin Islands. It is known for its reliability and extensive server network, offering RAM-only servers in over 105 countries, including multiple locations across the United States. You can pick from servers in 12 different US cities, which makes it a solid option for bypassing blackout games or accessing regional TV stations. This vast network makes it an excellent choice for accessing Hulu and other US-based streaming services from anywhere in the world. Users can connect 10 devices at the same time on the Basic plan, plus there’s 24/7 live chat.
We tested ExpressVPN’s US servers to see how well they performed with Hulu, and the results were outstanding. Our tests revealed that its US servers work seamlessly with Hulu, Netflix US, Max, and other major US streaming platforms. But how fast was this service? To get a clear picture of ExpressVPN’s capabilities compared to other leading VPNs, we conducted speed tests on a home broadband connection at three different times of the day.
The average download speed across these tests was 38.71 Mbps, which, while not the fastest VPN in this list, is still extremely impressive. These results make ExpressVPN a great option for HD streaming, gaming, torrenting, and making video calls.
ExpressVPN is based in the British Virgin Islands, a jurisdiction with no mandatory data retention laws, which is excellent news for privacy-conscious users. The VPN has a strict no-logs policy that has been independently verified, and its Lightway protocol has now been open-sourced and audited by Cure53, which means you can use its proprietary protocol with confidence.
This VPN doesn’t have a ton of advanced features but it does allow you to block ads, trackers, adult content, and shady sites automatically (great for setting up parental controls). Further, there’s a kill switch, plus its obfuscation kicks in as needed when visiting locations with extreme online censorship like China or the UAE. We thoroughly tested ExpressVPN for IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks and found that the VPN tunnel provides airtight privacy, effectively concealing your online activities from local networks, ISPs, and government agencies.
ExpressVPN offers custom apps for a wide range of devices, including Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Amazon Fire TV. It also provides a dedicated app for routers, allowing you to protect every device in your home via Wi-Fi. Last but not least, ExpressVPN throws in a free Smart DNS feature (Media Streamer) with every subscription. This allows you to unblock US streams on devices that won’t let you install a VPN directly (such as smart TVs or game consoles).
Note: if you’re struggling to get Hulu working, check out our dedicated article: ExpressVPN not working with Hulu? Try this!

IPVanish is a lightweight, novice-friendly provider that owns and operates more than 3,200 servers in 100+ countries. This VPN has dramatically improved its streaming abilities over the last few years and has everything you need to watch Hulu from abroad. In fact, you could even access stubborn platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, or BBC iPlayer. There are no bandwidth or connection limits and customer support staff are available 24 hours per day over live chat.
To evaluate IPVanish’s performance with Hulu, we conducted speed tests at three different times of day while connected to a US server. We tested using a normal home broadband connection with a baseline of 45.43 Mbps without the VPN. This helps to give you an idea of how the VPN will perform on a normal home network.
Our tests revealed that IPVanish US servers delivered an average download speed of 38.52 Mbps. This minimal drop left us with plenty of power for HD streaming, gaming, and torrenting. We were also happy to see that speeds remained pretty stable throughout the day, which means it will offer ideal conditions for watching Hulu, no matter where you travel or what time you want to stream.
IPVanish includes a strong security toolkit. To begin with, it uses unbreakable AES encryption backed up by DNS and IPv6 leak protection, a kill switch, and an audited no-logging policy. WireGuard is supported but there’s also OpenVPN obfuscation, multi-hop servers, automatic ad and tracker-blocking, and a new tool that checks whether links are actually safe to open or not. You can also attempt to reconnect automatically after an unexpected disconnection so that you don’t accidentally browse the web unprotected.
As with our other recommendations, we decided to test IPVanish US servers for leaks. The results were excellent, with no leaks detected. This means your true IP address and online activities will always remain hidden from your ISP and government snoops.
IPVanish offers apps for iOS, Android, MacOS, and Windows. You can manually install it on routers and Linux systems, though. This VPN has a new Advanced subscription tier that includes a cloud-based browser for sandboxed browser and 1 TB of online storage. This can be accessed for a mere $1.10 per month more than the standard plan.
Our tests confirmed the effectiveness of the sandboxed browser for private browsing, though it faced difficulties with HD streaming and frequently prompted captchas. Still, the secure browsing feature is highly useful for those in censored regions. Additionally, the cost of the Advanced plan is remarkably low for what you get, with both VPN access and cloud storage at a price that’s hard to find anywhere else.
Note: if you’re struggling to get Hulu working, check out our dedicated article: IPVanish not working with Hulu? Try this!
Buy this VPN if:
- You need a reliable VPN with US servers for streaming Hulu.
- You want app and domain-based split tunneling for flexible streaming.
- You plan to share your VPN subscription across multiple devices.
- You want a budget-friendly VPN without a long-term commitment.
- You value a VPN provider that owns and maintains its own server network.
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You prefer to pay for your VPN using cryptocurrency.
- You need a VPN that works reliably in highly restrictive regions like China.
PERFECT FOR STREAMING:IPVanish is fast, reliable, and security-conscious. It works with a wide range of streaming platforms, including Hulu. Doesn’t log your activities and comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee on long-term plans.

PureVPN is an excellent option if you’re looking for a cost-effective VPN that delivers impressive results. The VPN has over 6,000 servers in 65+ countries, including numerous locations across the US to watch Hulu. Want to stream Hulu at work, on campus, or abroad? Good news: we’ve had great results using this VPN alongside stubborn platforms like Netflix and BBC iPlayer, so you’ll never be short of things to watch. Up to 10 devices can be connected at the same time and customer support staff are ready to help at any time over live chat.
For the best experience on Hulu, we suggest selecting from the streaming-specific servers. You can find these in the “shortcuts” section of the app, where you’ll discover a list of servers optimized for streaming on 60+ different international platforms, including Hulu, Disney+ US, Amazon Prime US, and Netflix US.
We tested PureVPN’s US servers using a standard home broadband connection, and across all nine tests, we achieved an average download speed of 39.16 Mbps. Considering that our baseline average without the VPN was 45.43 Mbps, this is a strong result!
This kind of performance makes PureVPN perfect for users who demand the best possible speeds for streaming, gaming, torrenting, and doing other data-intensive tasks. It also makes PureVPN worth considering if you are paying for slower internet, as slower baseline speeds can suffer more if a VPN slows them down further.
PureVPN is committed to protecting user privacy. It has an independently audited no-logs policy that promises never to retain details of your activities. The VPN also includes essential security features like AES-256 encryption, a customizable kill switch, and DNS leak protection. There’s also split tunneling support, plus port fowarding functionality (though this costs extra). We tested the VPN ourselves and found that PureVPN does not suffer from IP, DNS, or WebRTC leaks.
If you’re traveling to a country where Western services like Hulu are restricted, we recommend sticking to the OpenVPN protocol, as PureVPN obfuscates these atuomatically. The app is set to auto-select the best protocol, but we noticed that it often defaults to IKEv2. We generally recommend switching to OpenVPN or WireGuard for better security and performance.
PureVPN’s apps are available for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and Firestick, and they are intuitive and packed with useful features. Alternatively, you can follow manual setup instructions to install this VPN on Linux systems or routers.
Note: if you’re struggling to get Hulu working check out our dedicated article: PureVPN not working with Hulu? Try this!

Private Internet Access is a reliable, versatile VPN with servers in over 90 countries (including some in the United States that are optimized for streaming). Whether you’re hoping to torrent anonymously, watch Hulu from abroad, or just browse Reddit safely, it’s a great choice. Customer support is available around the clock over live chat and unlike most other providers, Private Internet Access can secure every device you own at the same itme.
We tested PIA to see how it delivers performance-wise. We tested its US servers using home broadband at three different times of day. Although there was some variance across the day, the average download speed with PIA on the day of testing was 38.28 Mbps. These are superb speeds for tasks like streaming Hulu in HD. Our tests also showed that PIA’s speeds remain pretty stable throughout the day, ensuring a smooth viewing experience whether you’re at home, at work, or on the go.
PIA is known for its extensive customization options, making it a great choice for advanced users who want to fine-tune their VPN settings. You can choose between AES-128 and AES-256 encryption levels; for streaming Hulu, AES-128 is recommended to maximize speed and reduce buffering. Users can also choose from various support protocols, tweak MTU size and ports used, or allow specific apps to pass through unencrypted. Private Internet Access also supports port forwarding, making it perfect for gaming and torrenting.
This VPN follows a strict no-logs policy, as verified by its independent audits. There’s also a system-wide kill switch and automatic protection against DNS and IPv6 leaks, as well as a Stealth protocol which might be helpful browsing Hulu in countries with strict censorship. To check that PIA is working as advertised, we ran leak tests on its US servers. The results showed no IP, DNS, or WebRTC leaks, ensuring that your real location stays hidden and your ISP cannot track your online habits.
Private Internet Access offers apps for iOS, MacOS, Windows, Android, and Linux (GUI and command-line). You can also follow manual setup instructions to get this VPN running on most routers.

CyberGhost is an affordable service with a lot to offer. Its network spans an impressive 100+ countries and unlike most of its rivals, this provider tells you which servers are best for streaming Hulu abroad. You’ll also be able to access a variety of popular platforms like Netflix, ABC, NBC, CBS, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+. Torrenting is permitted on any server, though there are some optimized for this too. This VPN has a seven-connection limit and provides 24/7 support via live chat.
Now, the real question is whether CyberGhost is fast enough to provide a satisfying viewing experience. To answer this, we tested its American servers at three times of day (morning, noon, and afternoon) using a typical home broadband connection (45.43 Mbps on average). Here’s how CyberGhost did:
When connected to CyberGhost, the average download speed was 36.31 Mbps, which made it the slowest VPN on this list. However, that is a testament to the impressive speeds of all our recommendations, rather than a criticism of CyberGhost since these speeds are more than enough for streaming Hulu in 4K without any buffering or lag.
CyberGhost is designed with simplicity in mind. This makes it an excellent choice for users who want to watch Hulu abroad without a steep learning curve. At the same time, it offers a wealth of security features including 256-bit AES encryption, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, a kill switch, and a strict, professionally-audited no-logs policy. If you experience any performance issues, you have the option to switch servers or use the WireGuard protocol, which is optimized for faster speed.
CyberGhost offers specialist “NoSpy” servers. These servers are self-owned, self-hosted, and specially hardened to keep user data secure. You can use these servers anytime you want the highest levels of privacy. The only real caveat is that CyberGhost does not offer obfuscation. Thus, if you are living in, or planning on visiting a country with strict internet censorship, you may prefer to opt for an alternative that offers scrambling technologies that prevent ISPs from preventing you from connecting or from detecting VPN use.
We also like CyberGhost’s “Smart Rules” function, which allows you to set the VPN to automatically connect when launching specific apps, such as Hulu or your torrent client. You can also configure Smart Rules to connect to the VPN when using unknown or unprotected wifi networks. This helps to protect you against hackers when out in public and is particularly useful for remote workers who want to avoid security risks.
CyberGhost offers user-friendly apps for all major platforms, including Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and Amazon Fire TV. This broad compatibility allows you to get a US IP address and stream Hulu on any device. This VPN also provides step by step instructions for manually installing it on most routers.
Note: if you’re struggling to get Hulu working check out our dedicated article: CyberGhost not working with Hulu? Try this!
Buy this VPN if:

- You’re looking for a low-cost VPN that’s beginner-friendly and easy to use.
- You prefer a VPN with a strong no-logs policy and transparent privacy practices.
- You want a 45-day money-back guarantee.
Don’t buy this VPN if:
- You need more than seven simultaneous connections.
- You’re looking for advanced features like port forwarding or split tunneling.

PrivateVPN may not be as well known as some of the services above but it’s still well worth your time. This provider owns, operates, and acts as an ISP to all 200 of its servers, with a network covering 60+ countries. It’s an exceptionally reliable option for unblocking stubborn streaming platforms like Hulu, Peacock, and ESPN at school or work, plus you can connect up to 10 devices at the same time. Customer support is available over live chat, though only during European business hours.
To watch Hulu reliably, we discovered that it is necessary to pick one of PrivateVPN’s Dedicated IPs. We found the US-New York option worked best. The support agents suggested it’s easier to bypass streaming blocks using Firefox. If you have any issues watching Hulu with your VPN, we’d suggest following that advice.
Next, we tested PrivateVPN on a home broadband setup to see how it compares with its competitors. Having a smaller network raises concerns over the potential for server congestion and slower speeds. The good news is that our broadband-specific tests were great. The VPN reduced our download speeds from 45.43 Mbps to 37.75 Mbps, which means it is still ideally suited to data-heavy tasks like streaming, torrenting, and gaming.
PrivateVPN takes your security very seriously. To begin with, it has adjustable encryption, allowing you to prioritize either speed or privacy. There’s also a customizable kill switch, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, a true no-logs policy, and a Stealth VPN mode capable of beating the world’s toughest online censorship, helping you browse safely in places like China.
This VPN supports OpenVPN (UDP and TCP), PPTP, and L2TP protocols. Of these, we recommend sticking with OpenVPN for the best balance of speed and security. Wireguard configs are available on its website, but you will need to connect using a third-party client. Hopefully, they will add this protocol to the main clients soon.
One of PrivateVPN’s most attractive features is its affordability. Despite its low price, the VPN maintains a strong reputation for reliability and performance. It also includes port forwarding, which is a rare feature at this price point, making it popular with torrent users.
PrivateVPN has custom apps for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. These are designed with ease of use in mind. Just check out its manual setup guides if you need to install it on routers or Linux-based systems.
Note: if you’re struggling to get Hulu working, check out our dedicated article: PrivateVPN not working with Hulu? Try this!

- You prefer a low-cost service with impressive performance
Don’t buy this VPN if:

How to watch Hulu from abroad with a VPN
Don’t worry if you’ve never used a VPN before. Unblocking Hulu with a VPN is easy enough; just follow the simple steps below, and you’ll be streaming unrestricted in no time.
Here’s how to watch Hulu from abroad:
- Sign up for and download a VPN that works with Hulu. NordVPN is the most reliable option and our top recommendation.
- Install the VPN app from your provider’s website or official app store, run the app, and log in with your credentials.
- Choose a server or server location that can unblock Hulu. You will need a US server for an American IP address. If you’re unsure, ask your VPN’s customer service or consult its website.
- Open Hulu in a web browser or the Hulu app and start streaming!
- If Hulu still isn’t working, try clearing your cookies and cache and reloading the video. If problems persist, you may need to reach out to your VPN’s customer support.
If you still encounter an error message, you might need to tweak some settings on your device. IPv6 leaks are a common issue. See instructions on how to disable IPv6 on Mac and Windows later in this article.

Using a free VPN to watch Hulu
While you might get lucky and stumble onto a free VPN service with a server that unblocks Hulu, the only reliable way to unblock it is with a paid VPN from the list above. Generally, free providers don’t have the resources to continously find workarounds as Hulu upgrades its VPN-detection systems. So, even if you find a magical free Hulu VPN, it probably won’t last long.
Furthermore, free VPN providers tend to use slow, congested servers. Expect a lot of buffering and possible disruptions in service. Many free VPN service providers cap the maximum bandwidth or the total amount of data allotted per day or month, meaning you could get cut off in the middle of a show.
Finally, no VPN is truly free. Many free VPNs monitor users’ web traffic and mine the data, inject advertisements, place tracking cookies into your browser, and sell the information they dig up to advertising companies. Some have even been caught redirecting users to the wrong sites to make a quick buck. As the adage goes, if you don’t buy the product, you are the product. We recommend avoiding the risk and paying for a quality VPN instead.
How to get around Hulu home location error
To curb account sharing and allow access to local channels, Hulu asks users to set a home network within 30 days of signing up for the service. It also limits which types of devices will work when you try to watch from outside of your home.
For example, a Firestick or game console might only be able to stream Hulu when they’re connected to your home network. If you share your password with a family member in another home, they won’t be able to stream on their own game console or Firestick.
Instead, they might get an error message like this:
> “Your Hulu subscription allows you to use this type of device only on your home network. If you have moved or your internet service provider has changed, please update your Home Location in your Hulu Account settings on a computer.”
Or …
> Video not available in this location.
These errors can pop up for other reasons as well, such as Hulu not being able to identify your current network, using a shared wi-fi network, not checking in on your smartphone, or using a non-compatible VPN.
To fix this issue, you need to update your home network. If you’re on a VPN, this can be tricky, as your IP address probably changes every time you connect to the VPN. If your VPN has an option to use a dedicated or static IP address, opt for that because it won’t change.
Once you’re on the network or VPN server that you want to use to watch Hulu:
- Log out of Hulu
- Log back in on a streaming device like a Firestick, Roku, Chromecast, Apple TV, smart TV, or game console.
- Open your Hulu account page on the smartphone app or desktop website
- Click Privacy and Settings
- Click Set or Change Home and set your new network
If you’re trying to watch Hulu on the go, such as on a laptop or mobile device outside of your home, you might also encounter the same error. You might need to check in to show Hulu that you actually live where the account holder lives and aren’t just mooching off a friend’s account. You can check into Hulu by signing into the app while connected to your home network.
Note that you can only change your home network four times per year.
How to disable IPv6
Even when using the VPN providers on this list, there’s a chance you’ll still encounter an error message on Hulu instructing you to turn off your “anonymous proxy.” This is because the vast majority of VPN services still don’t protect against IPv6 leaks. While a VPN connection can route all your traffic requests through its own DNS servers and mask your IPv4 address, IPv6 addresses still get sent without being hidden. IPv6 serves the same purpose as IPv4, but contains a far wider range of possible IP addresses for internet-connected devices.
The solution is an imperfect but effective VPN block workaround for Hulu: disable IPv6. We say it’s imperfect because it would be better if everyone switched over to IPv6 because the IPv4 protocol is running out of unique IP addresses. Limiting yourself to IPv4 is bad for the long-term health of the internet, but it won’t affect much else.
How to disable IPv6 on a Windows PC (Windows 10):
- Disconnect and close the VPN app
- Tap Windows Key+R to open the Run prompt
- Type
ncpa.cpland hit Enter to open your Network Connections - Find the connection you are using, right click it, and select Properties
- On the Networking or General tab, uncheck the box that says “Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)”
- Click OK to save changes and close the Window
- Tap Windows Key+R and select Command Prompt (Admin), then hit Yes when asked if it’s okay for the program to make changes to your computer
- In the command prompt (black window), type
ipconfig /flushdnsand hit Enter. - Reconnect to the VPN, refresh the Hulu page, and enjoy the video!
How to disable IPv6 on Mac OSX:
- Disconnect and close the VPN app
- Open the Apple menu.
- Choose System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced
- Click TCP/IP.
- Click on the Configure IPv6 pop-up menu and select Off.
- Click OK and Apply (to apply the change).
- Reconnect to the VPN, refresh the Hulu page, and enjoy the video!
Hulu not working with your VPN? Try these steps
If you have subscribed to a VPN that isn’t working with Hulu, there is a large chance that its servers have already been blacklisted. Hulu works hard to block VPNs, which means that very few providers still work. As a result, you will need to cancel your subscription and subscribe to one of our recommended VPNs for Hulu instead.
If you have already subscribed to one of our recommended VPNs for Hulu, then you can follow the steps below to get it up and running:
- Check with your VPN to find out which US server is optimized for streaming Hulu.
- Restart your browser.
- Try reinstalling the latest version of the VPN app.
- Restart your device and re-launch the VPN. Now launch the Hulu app.
- Clear your cookies and browser cache.
- Disable GPS tracking on your device or update the GPS location in your browser.
Still, having issues? We cover more troubleshooting tips in our guide to Hulu not working with VPNs.
Do GPS spoofers work with Hulu?
It’s often more difficult to access geo-blocked streaming services on mobile devices. That’s because it allows these platforms to verify your location not just via your IP address, but via your actual GPS location. If one of these points to a different country than the other, most streaming sites will just throw an error and prevent you from watching anything.
This is why GPS spoofing apps alone will not help you access Hulu abroad. However, if you combine them with a VPN, you will have a much higher chance of success. Alternatively, you can choose a VPN that has built-in GPS spoofing, like NordVPN, to cut out the middle man and stream Hulu from anywhere in the world.
Watching Hulu with a VPN: FAQs
Why Do I Need a VPN for Hulu?
Let’s break down why you might need a VPN for Hulu.
- Bypass Geographical Restrictions: Hulu has an extensive collection of content, but unfortunately, not all of it can be accessed from around the world. However, a VPN can help you overcome this obstacle by hiding your IP address, enabling you to watch movies and TV shows that may be restricted in your region.
- Avoid Bandwidth Throttling: Ever noticed slower streaming speeds during peak hours? Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) throttle bandwidth during high-traffic times. A VPN can prevent this by hiding your online activities, ensuring smooth and uninterrupted streaming.
- Enhanced Privacy: Protecting your online privacy is super important when the likes of internet snoopers are lurking in the shadows. Fortunately, a VPN puts a shield between you and the outside world, encrypting your connection to ensure your ISP and hackers stay out of what you get up to online.
Is using a VPN with Hulu legal?
Yes, using a VPN with Hulu is legal. The only exception is if you are in a country in which VPNs are illegal but this is only a few countries in the world. However, using a VPN or any other proxy to bypass Hulu’s location restrictions does violate the service’s terms of use.
So using a VPN to access Hulu from abroad is against Hulu’s rules, but not strictly illegal. Hulu could suspend or terminate a VPN user’s account, but we’ve seen no precedent of this ever happening. Instead, Hulu just tries to block VPN users from watching when a VPN connection is detected.
How can I pay for Hulu from outside the US?
Hulu doesn’t just require that your IP address be in the United States. Payment must also come from the US. If you live outside of the country without a domestic credit card or PayPal account, this can be tricky.
There are a couple of solutions that reportedly work, though in the interest of being transparent we didn’t test any of these out.
- A Hulu gift card
- A prepaid gift card from this website costs about $30. Please bear in mind that we have never tried the service that is linked, and you may decide to use some other outlet that sells Hulu gift cards via email – so do some research.
- StatesPay is another virtual credit card provider that costs $3.95 per month. In theory you should be able to just pay for the first month to set up the account and then use Hulu gift cards to make subsequent payments. The site is not accepting new sign ups as of the time of writing, however, so you might have to wait a while before the service is available again.
- Prepaid cards from Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover that are linked to a US address.
- Change PayPal country or create a new PayPal that is based in the US
How can I watch Hulu Japan?
If you want to watch Hulu Japan from outside of Japan, then you’ll need to connect your streaming device to a VPN server in that country. Just bear in mind that you must have signed up for Hulu in Japan to watch Japan-only Hulu content. This is because Hulu Japan is a completely separate service from Hulu USA.
The Hulu brand was sold to Nippon TV in 2016, and while it still uses the same logo and name, it is not related to Hulu USA in any other way. That said, Hulu does license some shows to Nippon TV as part of the ongoing deal.
All of the VPNs we have recommended have servers in Japan. However, we only test VPNs with the US version of Hulu. If you are abroad and have a Japanese Hulu subscription, you will need to test a Japanese server yourself to see if it unblocks Hulu Japan. (Spoiler: it should work perfectly!)
What can I watch on Hulu?
There’s no shortage of content on Hulu. Depending on the package you choose, you’ll have access to live TV channels, on-demand TV shows and movies, or both. In fact, there’s even a bundle with ESPN+ and Disney+ for access to even more content.
It would take a long time to list the whole library so here are some of the most popular options available:

It does. I just signed up for express vpn and got it working. One city might work while another does not.
Another one that does NOT work with Hulu is Bitdefender Premium VPN.
Express VPN does not work for Hulu (residing in BDA)
I am using ExpressVPN and currently reside in Germany. Unfortunately Express doesn’t work here either. Back to the drawing board.
Ask customer service which server to connect to. It works.
I used Avira Phantom Pro, and I’d say it is hit or miss. My connection isn’t the most stable, so if I’m watching Hulu and the internet cuts out, the VPN gets picked up. When trying to reload the video, I get a proxy warning from hulu. Originally, I could just clear the browsing data and restart the VPN and things were working. After this happening many times, none of the 3 US options offered by Avira for the US work with hulu. Essentially, it is useless for me now.
That said, if you have really stable internet and don’t think it will cut out while streaming, you may not end up with my problem.
I’m in Nicaragua and I have an iPad will any of these Vpns listed above be ok to use?
Express and Nord are your best bet when using the mobile app.
Express VPN is giving the anonymous proxy error on Hulu using iPhone. Any thoughts?
Ask customer support which server to use. Only a couple of them work
Just spoke with ExpressVPN on chat and their VPN doesn’t work with Hulu unless you are outside of the US. So for those of us who want to have all internet traffic go through a VPN, that isn’t an option.
I had the same problem with expressvpn like yours bob. it doesn’t work with hulu when i want all traffic go with vpn. do you have any recommendation?
I bought le vpn that was working fine until the end of august 2016. From last month, september 2016 on it does not work with hulu or netflix anymore.
Thanks for that info. I got 3 mos. but may try something else when it is done . I am using ipvanish
